CAPP response to Cornell Bowers College of Computing and Information Science title proposals

CAPP review of the CIS Proposals for use of the Professor of Practice and the Research Professor titles

The unanimous feedback[minus one CAPP member that recused themselves for being from CIS] has been that the proposals look consistent to prior proposals reviewed by the committee. It was noted that there was appreciation that there was clear discussions of the limited (but well-defined) conditions under which individuals holding such appointments can compete for tenure-track appointments. Additionally, there was appreciation that the proposals were well articulated and precise.

I did want to share one additional comment shared by a member to the extent it is informative in some way:

Anyone who has managed to thrive and recoup one’s full salary via grants, etc, over the period of time needed to reach Full Research Professor stage is likely more valuable and productive than most tenured Full Professors.  It seems to me (even as a tenure system skeptic) that such accomplished Research Professors should be strongly considered for transition to the tenured ranks with hard salaries, so long as they accept the accompanying responsibilities (teaching, admin)!
