00:41:59               Abigail Crites:    Yes! I love the way you put that, Lindsay!

00:42:06               Sara Pritchard:   +1

00:42:11               Abigail Crites:    That is what I was trying to say.

00:43:40               Sara Pritchard:   I suspect there are also equity issues around official SDS requests because some students may not feel comfortable or empowered to approach that office.

00:44:53               Lindsay Goodale:             That’s true, Sara. I’ve had advisees who could have used some help but didn’t want to approach SDS.

00:45:52               Sara Pritchard:   I appreciate your point, Mark. (I’m thinking of a former student who had 3 family emergencies in a single term and never asked any prof for an extension. I only found out after the fact.)

00:47:22               Abigail Crites:    Mark, I do this as well, but I had a lot of people asking for things beyond the automatic ones I provided! That’s why I felt things were much more rough for them than usual.

00:47:28               Lindsay Goodale:             Is it an extension if the deadline is just later? How do you deal with extension requests past the extension/second deadline?

00:48:09               Abigail Crites:    I have 2 hw drops, 3 lecture drops, and 2 lab drops.

00:49:08               Mark Sarvary (he/him): Replying to “I have 2 hw drops, 3…”

I am having a hard time with lab drops and assignment drops because I do not want to signal that an assignment is not important.

00:50:42               Mark Sarvary (he/him): Replying to “Is it an extension i…”

We need to communicate clearly that the ideal due date is the one they should submit their assignments by. That will guarantee quick feedback and enough time to build on that knowledge for the next assignment. We ended up with a few students who still missed the due date, but the number was much smaller than in previous semesters.

00:51:23               Lindsay Goodale:             Replying to “Is it an extension i…”

Thank you. And you publish both dates (per assignment) in the syllabus?

00:51:27               Mark Sarvary (he/him): Replying to “Mark, I do this as w…”

Yes, some do (I am answering those emails now :-). But the number is smaller than without this built-in extension.

00:52:03               Mark Sarvary (he/him): Replying to “Is it an extension i…”

Yes, it is the due date and the “penalty-free extension” due date.

00:52:42               Lindsay Goodale:             Reacted to “Yes, it is the due d…” with 👍

00:53:01               Debbie Krahmer:              The difficulty about having the deadline is that many students try not to use their accommodations due to the pressures of ableism–they want to do it “on their own” until they’re completely overwhelmed, and then they NEED the accommodations or drop the class.

00:53:26               Abigail Crites:    Replying to “The difficulty about…”

+1

00:55:31               Mark Sarvary (he/him): Reacted to “I appreciate your po…” with 👍🏻

01:00:25               Marina Caillaud:                Thank YOU for organizing this

01:02:22               Mark Sarvary (he/him): Thank you everyone! This was great.

01:03:13               Dorothy Debbie:               Yes thanks, very helpful

01:03:30               Lindsay Goodale:             Thank you, everyone
