Global Cornell Speaker/Panel:

Roy Colle, Corey Earle, Elaine Engst, and Heike Michelsen

Presenting on the new CAPE book: Beyond Borders: Exploring the History of Cornell’s Global Dimensions

May 16th, 2:00-3:30pm

Description: Although there have been excellent books written about Cornell history, none have focused on the many stories about Cornellians’ global experiences. Since the founding of the university in 1865, Cornell University has had extraordinary involvements with people around the world. Its faculty and students have studied other cultures, have welcomed world leaders to campus, and have contributed to international programs in many disciplines. Under the leadership of Professor Roy Colle, CAPE launched an effort to document this part of the university heritage. In 2021, an editorial team was formed consisting of Roy Colle, Heike Michelsen, Elaine Engst, and Corey Earle, who conceptualized the book project, attracted authors, and edited contributions.

Beyond Borders: Exploring the History of Cornell’s Global Dimensions is the title of this brand-new book, an anthology of 58 vignettes about Cornell’s many historical achievements in international activities going back to its founding. Published in association with Cornell University Press, the vignettes were written largely by retired and active Cornell faculty and staff – many of whom discuss their personal involvements in these Cornell activities. In this panel discussion, the book’s editors will discuss the process that led to the book’s publication and highlight remarkable engagements on campus and abroad.

Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event.

Bios: While Royal Colle taught international and development communication courses for 40 years at Cornell, he also conducted research and aid projects in third world countries. He chaired the Communication Department for ten years.

Heike Michelsen was Director of Programming at Cornell’s Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies. She also served as a Senior Research Officer at the International Service for National Agricultural Research.

Elaine Engst is Cornell University Archivist Emerita. She worked as Director of the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections in the Cornell University Library.

Corey Earle is a Visiting Lecturer in the American Studies Program at Cornell University, teaching Cornell history. He works with Alumni Affairs and Development.
