Health Accommodation FAQ

Q1. How should I support a student who is sick, injured or navigating a mental health concern?

Faculty are expected to make appropriate arrangements to support students in meeting learning outcomes when they experience short-term acute conditions and injuries (e.g., flu broken arm, significant mental health concern, etc.).  If a student contacts you about rescheduling an exam, missing a class, or needing some straightforward support (e.g., permission to type their exam instead of handwriting), you are empowered to make the appropriate arrangements and provide flexibility in these sudden, unpredictable situations.  Students should not be expected to share personal health information with their instructors.

Q2: When should I refer a student to Student Disability Services

Instructors should refer students to connect with Student Disability Services as soon as possible if they will have an ongoing need for accommodations (more then 2 weeks).  The student will need to register with Student Disability Services and share information/documentation that supports their request.  It can take Student Disability Services up to 3 weeks to review the student’s information and determine appropriate accommodations.
