What the Colleges Say About the Evaluation of Service and External Engagement

P1.

Excellence in service is indicated by a reasonable degree of participation in departmental, School, and university committees and governing bodies; the activities of the School’s Extension Division; academic organizations such as the Industrial Relations Research Association and the Academy of Management, and the American Economic Association; and other professional activities such as book and manuscript reviewing.

Evaluation: By the judgment of qualified colleagues.

P2.

External Engagement (Submitted by candidate):

Provide a statement about the nature of your engagement with sectors outside of academia as expressed in the specific responsibilities of your appointment. Each school may have a specific manifestation of these expectations, such as extension, engagement with the hospitality industry, and intra- or entrepreneurship for Johnson faculty at Cornell Tech. Identify the fields or areas specific to your position description in which you believe your engagement should be evaluated.

Your statement should elucidate major themes of your external engagement, activities, principal achievements, and the relevance of your work to the public and/or private sectors. You are expected to make a compelling case for substantive contributions at the leadership level. Because publications and grants are listed in your CV, do not list them here except to illustrate their relation to your external engagement activities.

Service Statement (Submitted by candidate)

Provide a statement of the general nature of your service activities, including your philosophy of service and accomplishments to date. Your statement should consider service both within and beyond the university, as appropriate. Community service activities must be related to your discipline and position within the school.

P3

Submit a copy of all engagement articles authored or co-authored that have been published or accepted for publication. If you have more than ten (10) articles, submit a representative sample of only ten, with at least half published since being appointed as Assistant Professor at Cornell.

Include a cover sheet that lists each paper and its publication status (published or accepted) in a journal or other medium specific to your engagement. In the case of co-authored papers, include a statement describing the nature and extent of your contribution.

Target journals/media for engagement publications may be different from leading research publications in your discipline; note these here. Publications listed here should not be duplicated in Research Publications-Articles.
Note that your CV must include your full list of publications.
