Class Component Definitions

Component Definition
Lecture Instructor-led course where instruction occurs in a traditional setting.  May include a variety of pedagogies, including break-out and small-group exercises, but the majority of the instruction is lecture-oriented.  Lecture courses may have affiliated discussion and/or laboratory components.
Discussion Instructor-led course designed to give students the opportunity to engage more deeply with course content.  Discussions are usually associated with a lecture.
Laboratory Course that meets in a defined physical setting for the purpose of the application of methods and principles of a discipline.  Students work under the guidance and supervision of faculty, research assistants, or teaching assistants.  Labs are often associated with a lecture but may be standalone courses.
Seminar Instructor-led course that emphasizes discussions and presentations based on literature, theory, problems, or research.  The course is interactive and is focused on advanced or discipline-specific topics.
Studio Course that meets in a defined physical setting for the purpose of the application of design and artistic theories.  The focus is on mastery of design, art, or performance.  Students work under the guidance and supervision of faculty, research assistants, or teaching assistants.
Clinical Course that involves practical application of previously studied medical or health care theories in a clinical setting.  Courses are under the supervision of a clinical supervisor or faculty.
Field study Instructor-led course that provides an immersive experience in a setting outside the classroom.
Independent/individual study Course that is individualized based on a plan of study negotiated between the student and faculty.  Student works independently and faculty provides guidance, review, and evaluation of student work.

Internship

Course in which the student has an immersive experience for the purpose of gaining practical experience in a work-like atmosphere.  Student works independently, and typically off campus.

Practicum

Course that involves the practical application of previously studied theory in a setting outside the classroom.  Student works independently and faculty provide guidance, review, and evaluation of student work.

Project

Course in which students work in small groups on a focused project under instructor guidance and supervision.  The majority of the time is spent outside of the formal classroom.
Research Course in which student creates new knowledge through in-depth investigation, analysis, or research with the expectation of a final dissertation, thesis, report, or publication.  Student works independently and faculty provide guidance, review, and evaluation of student work.
