Faculty Elections

Eligibility to Vote

The electorate consists of those academic titleholders who have University Voting Rights (UVR).

University Faculty with UVR are the President, emeritus/a professors, emeritus/a associate professors, University professors, professors-at-large in residence, professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and all courtesy professorial ranks of the several colleges, schools and separate academic departments, divisions and centers at Ithaca and Geneva.

Research-Teaching-Extension (RTE) faculty with UVR are those who have the title research professor (all ranks), clinical professor (all ranks), professor-of-the-practice (all ranks), senior lecturer, senior research associate, senior extension associate, senior scientist, senior scholar, research scientist, principal research scientist, librarian, associate librarian, archivist, and associate archivist.


When to Vote

Faculty elections are typically staged in the spring semester.


How Elections Work

The elections are conducted via a ranked Hare System.


Descriptions of Elected Positions

Dean of Faculty

The Dean of Faculty is to be filled by a member of the University Faculty (including emeriti) for a 3-year term, renewable up to 5 years.

The Dean represents the interests of the faculty to the Trustees and the Administration as well as to students, employees, and alumni. Conversely, it is the responsibility of the Dean to ensure that the faculty is fully informed about campus issues and the concerns of each university constituency. Detailed job description

Associate Dean of Faculty

The Associate Dean and Secretary of the Faculty (ADOF) is selected from among the tenured members of the University Faculty.  The ADOF assists the Dean of the Faulty, carrying out such duties as are assigned by the Dean and serving as Acting Dean on appropriate occasions. The ADOF chairs the Nominations and Elections Committee and is a ex officio member of each committee of the Senate.

University Faculty Committee

The UFC acts as a liaison between the Faculty Senate and the President, Provost, and other senior University administrators. It sets the agenda for Senate meetings. It establishes and/or reappoints ad hoc committees and subcommittees.

Nominations and Elections Committee

N&E nominates candidates for election by the University Faculty for Faculty Trustees, for Dean of the Faculty, for Associate Dean and Secretary of the Faculty, for members at large of the Senate, and for elected committees and offices of the Faculty and of the Senate. The Committee shall propose to the Senate members and chairs of appointed Faculty and Senate committees and members of administration and faculty-administration committees when the administration makes such requests to the Senate.

Senator-at-Large

Bylaws state that in addition to department Senators and College RTE Senators that there shall be nine at-large members with three seats for the tenured faculty, three seats for assistant professors, and three seats for members of the RTE Faculty with university voting rights.

Faculty Trustee

There are two Faculty Trustees and they serve four-year terms. They are voting ex officio members of the Senate.
