Professor Walter R. Lynn became a member of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty in 1961. He directed the Program on Science, Technology, and Society for eight years, and served as Director of Cornell's Center for Environmental Research, and Director of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He also served as Faculty Trustee from 1980-85, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Cornell Research Foundation.

During his term as Dean of the University Faculty, he recognized several issues that faced the Faculty, including the quality of undergraduate education and the status of federal support for research, among others. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Weiss Teaching Awards recognizing outstanding undergraduate teaching faculty.

Professor Lynn was named Emeritus on February 1, 1998, and has been serving as University Ombudsman for the past ten years.
